What is the EU Blue Card?

The EU Blue Card is a long-term residence permit for highly qualified third-country nationals (outside the EU/EEA and Switzerland) who work in the Czech Republic in occupations requiring a university degree or equivalent professional qualification.

The Blue Card allows you to:

  • work legally for a specific employer in the Czech Republic,
  • reside long-term (typically for the duration of the employment contract + 3 months, max. 3 years),
  • transition to permanent residence or a Blue Card with another employer after meeting conditions.

Note: The Blue Card is not the same as a seasonal work visa or short-term work stay. It is intended for qualified employment with an appropriate salary.

Who is the Blue Card for?

The Blue Card is intended for foreigners who meet requirements including:

  • university education (or equivalent qualification) relevant to the offered occupation,
  • a valid employment contract or binding job offer with a Czech employer,
  • an occupation on the MPSV list (shortage professions or highly qualified roles),
  • the income requirement – gross annual salary must reach at least CZK 590,580 (for 1 May 2026 – 30 April 2027).

Typical applicants include IT specialists, engineers, doctors, researchers, managers, and other highly qualified workers.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

1. Is meeting the income requirement enough?

No. The income requirement is only one of many. You also need appropriate education, an employment contract, an occupation on the MPSV list, and compliance with other Ministry of the Interior requirements.

2. Is gross or net salary counted?

For the Blue Card, gross salary (before deductions) is assessed. The calculator uses gross income.

3. What about bonuses or a 13th salary?

Generally, the total gross annual remuneration agreed in the contract is assessed. Verify details with the Ministry of the Interior or an immigration lawyer.

4. Does the same limit apply to the Employee Card?

No. The Employee Card has different income requirements depending on the occupation. The CZK 590,580 limit applies specifically to the Blue Card for the given period.

5. How often does the threshold change?

MPSV regularly updates the limit (typically once a year) based on average wages in the economy. Always check the current validity period.

6. Can I apply for a Blue Card while working remotely?

Yes, if you have an employment contract with a Czech employer and meet other conditions.

7. Is this calculator legally binding?

No. It is an indicative tool. Verify exact conditions with the Czech Ministry of the Interior.
